Why timing matters
Wrong addresses are the most common order change customers ask for: a missing apartment number, an old address saved in their browser, a gift that should go to someone else. The fix is the same every time. What changes is the cost.
Before the order is picked, it's a 30-second edit. After the label prints, it's a voided label and a reprint. After it ships, it's a carrier fee, a return, or a second shipment. So the most useful thing you can do is catch the change as early as possible.
How to change a shipping address in Shopify admin
For any order that hasn't been fulfilled:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Orders and open the order.
- In the Customer section, find Shipping address and click edit.
- Update the address and click Save.
- Confirm the change with the customer, ideally by replying in the same email thread so they can check it.
Shopify updates the order itself, so the next label you buy for it uses the new address. If Shopify flags the address as unverified, check it with the customer before you ship. An unverified address is one of the most common causes of carrier delays.
Note: updating the address on a customer's profile doesn't change orders they've already placed. Always edit the order.
If the label is already printed
A printed label carries the old address, even if you update the order afterward. To fix it:
- Void the existing label. If you bought it through Shopify Shipping, void it from the order. If you used another shipping app, void it there.
- Edit the shipping address on the order.
- Buy a new label and swap it on the package.
Don't skip the void. An unvoided label can still be charged, and a package with two labels confuses carriers.
If a 3PL or shipping app fulfills your orders
This is where address changes slip through. Many 3PLs and shipping tools, such as ShipStation or Veeqo, pull a copy of the order when it's created. If you edit the address in Shopify after that, the warehouse may still be working from the old copy.
Before you count a change as done:
- Check whether your integration syncs order edits or only imports new orders.
- Ask your 3PL when orders are locked into a pick batch. After that point, the change usually has to go through them directly.
- Update the address in both places if you're unsure, then confirm with the warehouse.
If the order has already shipped
Once an order ships, it can't be edited in Shopify. Your options, roughly from cheapest to most expensive:
- Carrier redirect or intercept. Most major carriers offer a way to reroute a package in transit, usually for a fee and not always guaranteed.
- Let it deliver and reship. If the old address is still reachable, such as a previous home or a relative's place, the customer may be able to collect it.
- Return to sender and reship. It's slowest and costs you twice, but it's sometimes the only option.
Decide in advance who pays for each case: customer typos, carrier errors, and late requests are worth a line in your shipping policy.
What to do at each order status
| Order status | How to change the shipping address |
|---|---|
| Unfulfilled, not picked | Edit the address on the order in Shopify admin |
| Sent to a 3PL or pick batch | Edit in Shopify, then confirm the change with your warehouse |
| Label printed | Void the label, edit the address, buy a new label |
| Shipped | Carrier redirect, or return and reship |
| Delivered to the wrong address | Handle case by case under your shipping policy |
Let customers fix their own address
Every row above the "Label printed" line can be handled by the customer, if they're given a way to do it. In Shopify, customers can't edit an order's address on their own. They have to email you, wait for a reply, and hope it arrives before the order is picked.
A self-serve address editor puts the fix on the order status page and in the confirmation email, open only until a cutoff you set. The customer fixes the mistake in seconds, and your team never sees the ticket. For help choosing that cutoff, see How long should customers have to change their order?
Questions
Can a customer change their shipping address after placing an order in Shopify?
Not on their own by default. Shopify's order editing is a merchant tool, so the customer has to contact you. With a self-serve order editing app, customers can update the address themselves until a cutoff you set.
Can I change a shipping address after the order is fulfilled?
Not as an order edit. Once an order is marked fulfilled, the address on that shipment is set. You'll need a carrier redirect, or a return and reship.
Why didn't my address change reach my warehouse?
Your 3PL or shipping app probably imported the order before you edited it. Check whether your integration syncs order edits, and confirm changes directly with your warehouse once an order is in a pick batch.
Does changing the address change shipping costs or taxes?
It can. A new address in a different zone, state, or country can change the shipping rate, and in some regions the tax. Check the order totals after a large address change, especially across borders.
How do I stop customers entering the wrong address in the first place?
Address autocomplete and validation at checkout catch many typos. No checkout catches everything, though. Giving customers a short window to fix their own mistakes handles the rest.
